2008 Volvo C30

A Smaller Volvo in a Nimble and Muscular Package

In conjunction with Volvo Cars unveiling of the all-new C30 at 2006 Paris Motor Show, Volvo Cars of North America announced that it will bring the car to the U.S. market no earlier than the 2008 model year. The announcement comes just nine months after the C30 Design Concept was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in early 2006.

Pricing and volume expectations for the U.S.-bound C30 have not yet been set.

The edgy design of the C30 features a unique frameless glass tailgate, a confident stance and the broad shoulders that have become a Volvo design hallmark. "The C30 has plenty of muscles in a sporty and compact package," noted Volvo Car's Design Director Steve Mattin. "Anyone who recalls the Volvo SCC (Safety Concept Car) or the classic P1800ES will recognize the exclusive and convenient rear tailgate. The distinctive tail lamps ensure that no one will be uncertain about which car they are following."

Putting 218 horsepower to the front wheels, the new C30 is powered by a turbocharged inline five-cylinder engine that produces 236 pound-feet of torque.

Measuring in at just 167 inches in length, the C30 is the smallest member of Volvo's model range -- an impressive 8.5 inches shorter than the Volvo S40 sport sedan while still retaining the 103.9 inch wheel base, which really pushes the wheels towards the end of the car. "A car that exudes muscular maneuverability must live up to the promise of its looks when you are behind the wheel," said C30 project leader Hakan Abrahamsson. "Therefore, the C30 has a chassis that offers sporty driving characteristics, nimble handling and responsive steering."

Right out of the box, audio enthusiasts will appreciate the Volvo C30's standard 160-watt stereo system. And true audiophiles can choose a Premium Sound system that closely matches the acclaimed system offered in the new C70, with a digital 5x130W ICE Power amplifier from Alpine, Dolby Pro Logic II Surround, and 10 loudspeakers from Danish loudspeaker manufacturer Dynaudio. Total output for the Premium Sound System is an astonishing 650 watts. Simply put, it rocks.

When it comes to safety, the new C30 is a true Volvo. Among other things, it will be available with BLIS (Blind Spot Information System), which helps the driver to identify another vehicle in the blind spot at the rear sides of the car.

The front end incorporates the same patented multi-steel structure as the S40 and V50. Combined with airbags and safety belt pretensioners, the C30 offers first class safety. But the C30 wouldn't be a Volvo if it didn't also include such standard safety equipment as the Whiplash Protection System, WHIPS, and a Side Impact Protection System with side airbags and the Inflatable Curtain, IC.

2007 Volvo S60 R

An Intelligent Volvo Performance Car: S60 R

The Volvo S60 R, unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, is packaged with the most powerful engine in the Volvo range. Volvo's newly developed five-cylinder 2.5 liter in-line turbocharged power plant produces 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque between 1,950 and 5,250 rpm.

The R engine's power output per liter of cylinder displacement places it among market leaders for performance efficiency. The engine reaches maximum torque at 1,950 rpm, thanks to the larger cylinder bore and a new turbo from KKK, with a maximum charging pressure of about 1 bar. The high charging pressure significantly raises the temperature of the intake air, so the S60 R is fitted with twin intercoolers.

The engine is equipped with Dual Wide Range CVVT continuously variable valve timing, on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. CVVT adjusts the valve opening times to suit the engine speed and load, lowering fuel consumption and reducing emissions, while increasing performance. The emission standards of the R engine satisfy American LEV requirements and conform to the European Euro 4 standard.

To withstand the increased stresses, pistons and connecting rods have been heavily reinforced and cylinder head cooling has been improved. The oil sump has been re-designed to safeguard oil supply to the engine under extreme G-forces.

New Six-Speed Manual Gearbox

The new Volvo six-speed manual gearbox was specially designed to handle the high torque delivered by the engine. The short-throw shifter allows fast gear changes enhancing the connectivity between the car and driver.

The optional 5 speed Geartronic automatic transmission offers the best of both worlds: the gearbox takes care of all gear changes automatically, or the driver can change gears manually, without a clutch.

The automatic transmission is also adaptive. It monitors the drivers' driving style and adapts the gearchanging pattern accordingly. It also has a "Sport" mode selector in which the automatic transmission changes gears at a higher engine speed and downshifts faster.

Performance by Volvo also means the safety of handling and control that comes from the unique Volvo Four C (Continuously Control Chassis Concept). With this active chassis system, which compensates for road variances using a sophisticated network of sensors, Volvo's Haldex all-wheel-drive system, DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control), and "performance on demand" versatility, Volvo engineering is taking performance to the next level.

The Volvo S60 R is in showrooms since Spring 2003.

2008 Volvo C30 by Heico

World Premiere of the New Volvo C30 Concept Car

In cooperation with Volvo Cars North America, Heico Sportiv has created a versatile version of Volvo's new compact C30 model before the model hits the streets in North America.

The Volvo C30 T5 by Heico Sportiv was designed to appeal to urban driving enthusiasts who are just as passionate about their cars as they are about their time outdoors. With project partner Burton Snowboards in mind, Heico created a C30 concept that is at home in the city, as well as the switchbacks on the backcountry roads to the slopes.

One Car, Two Talents

The 2.5-liter turbocharged engine was upgraded to 300 bhp to achieve a refined, sporty feel on road. Equipped with all-wheel-drive, the C30 also promises excellent traction off-road. Adapting the electronic Haldex AWD system to the C30's electronic system was a strong challenge for Heico Sportiv engineers, but the system was fitted with perfect results. This goal was reached after weeks of detailed work.

Along with the AWD system, a specially designed and engineered suspension offers an additional 1 inch of ride clearance, and specially produced TOYO tires with a unique Heico tread pattern offer spectacular off-road performance. The tires, mounted on Heico's iconic Volutionz V. 8X18" sport-alloy wheels, raise the fun quotient even higher. After all, these tires are based on Toyo's R888 semi-slick performance tire. The Heico Sportiv sport suspension kit, carbon fiber strut tower bar, and 4-caliper high performance braking system (320mm front rotors) help make the C30 a true all-around performer.

The C30 concept car shows as well as it performs. The Heico C30's styling pays homage to the "XC-style" of the Volvo XC70 and XC90 models, paralleling some of the design features of both cars. The aggressive front end is dominated by the Heico Sportiv front grill and front bumper plate, which comes in handy while going off-road. Accentuated ducts in the front bumper allow more cool air to the engine and brakes, as well as accommodating high-performance fog lamps.

The rear bumper quotes the front, although in addition the middle section features four Heico sport tips on the high performance exhaust system (76mm each). These two components are complemented by specially designed side skirts and fender flares to round out the overall look. Making perhaps the most impact of all is the 7-stage "Heico ICE" camo paint scheme, an evocative, creative statement of outdoor winter activity and cutting-edge style.

The Engine

Featuring a ported and polished head, modified turbocharger, specially designed intercooler, electronic water injection, sport exhaust system, and custom ECU, the power of the 218 bhp T5 engine was modified to produce 300 bhp. Torque was increased to 310 lb-ft. Accordingly, the strong Swede runs the 0-60 mph distance in 5.5 sec. As with other U.S. Volvo models, the top speed is electronically limited to 130 mph. The five cylinder Volvo exhaust note: always there, but never disturbing. Thanks to a specially developed downpipe, race catalyst, sound pipe, and sport silencer with chrome exhaust tips, an incredible exhaust tone is achieved.

The Interior

The interior is well thought out and hand-crafted to a world class standard. The two-tone leather in "Alpha Gray" and "Sapphire Black" dominates the cabin. The silver stitching in particular makes a very special detail that accents the carefully crafted hides. Specially contoured front and rear seating, along with specially designed two-tone door panels highlight the full-leather dashboard and headliner in rich "lugano leather", a real treat for the senses.

The center console houses specially developed integrated cradles for the highly desirable iPOD Nano and the Motorola GPS-enabled "Q" phone. The bespoke feeling is completed with aluminum design features on the pedals, shift knob, center console, handbrake, and door pins.
